Sarah Bird

Telephone telephone conference facilitator

Sarah has managed a national telephone conference service since 1999. She co-ordinates a telephone conferencing service which has enabled nearly 4000 people nationally to share information, develop skills and make contacts to support their activities. Participants are given a chance to talk about issues that affect them and offered a variety of information and advice by expert guest speakers.

Both residents and organisations benefit from taking part as they can use telephone conferencing in a way that enables them to consult with and network their own residents and tenants and colleagues.

Benefits to participants include:

  • Networking with others
  • Sharing ideas and experiences
  • Discovering solutions
  • Feeling less isolated and getting more support
  • Feeling motivated and more confident in their quest
  • Giving choices where there may not have been in the past
  • Helping give a voice to those who may not have felt heard

Sarah facilitates discussions and compiles a concluding report of key messages. She deals directly with volunteer resident representatives and community development staff across the country.

Sarah has also introduced training workshops for those who would like to organise and run their own telephone conferences. The modules are:

  • An introduction to telephone conferencing
  • How to organise a telephone conference
  • Effective chairing of telephone conference
